A study to assess the effectiveness of video assisted teaching programme on knowledge regarding postpartum depression among primi mother at selected area of M.P.

Merlin Mohan Boddeti

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health issue that affects many new mothers, particularly primiparous women who are experiencing childbirth and motherhood for the first time. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a video-assisted teaching programme in improving knowledge about postpartum depression among primi mothers in a selected area of Madhya Pradesh (M.P.). A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was adopted. A total of 60 primi mothers were selected through purposive sampling from a community health centre. A structured knowledge questionnaire was administered before and after the intervention. The video-assisted teaching programme included information on the causes, symptoms, risk factors, early identification, prevention, and management of postpartum depression.

The findings revealed a significant improvement in knowledge scores post-intervention. The mean pre-test knowledge score was considerably lower compared to the post-test score, and the statistical analysis using paired t-tests confirmed that the difference was highly significant (p < 0.001). The majority of the participants reported that the video format was engaging and easy to understand. The study concludes that video-assisted teaching is an effective educational strategy to enhance awareness and understanding of postpartum depression among primi mothers. Early education and awareness can help in timely recognition and seeking support, thereby promoting maternal mental health and well-being. The study recommends incorporating similar educational interventions in maternal and child health programmes.
