Effectiveness of educational package on knowledge and practice of postnatal mothers with regard to newborn care in a selected hospital of New Delhi

Mallika Joon and Roshni Sinha

The neonatal period is the most critical and vulnerable phase of life, with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. Effective newborn care during this period is essential to ensure survival and healthy development. However, many postnatal mothers lack adequate knowledge and confidence in providing appropriate care. Education and support during the immediate postnatal period can significantly improve maternal practices and neonatal outcome. This study was conducted assess the effectiveness of an educational package on the knowledge and practices of postnatal mothers related to newborn care in a selected hospital of New Delhi. The objectives of the study were 1. To assess knowledge of postnatal mothers regarding newborn care 2. To observe the practice of postnatal mothers regarding newborn care 3. To evaluate effectiveness of educational package regarding newborn care. A quantitative pre-experimental approach was adopted with one-group pre-test post-test design. 60 samples were selected by using non-probability convenient sampling technique. The data was analyzed and interpreted by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The effectiveness of educational package on newborn care was assessed by using paired ‘t’ test score.
The study findings clearly indicated that most postnatal mothers initially had inadequate knowledge and demonstrated poor practices related to new-born care. This knowledge gap poses a serious risk to neonatal health, especially during the critical neonatal period when infants are most vulnerable. The implementation of a structured educational package proved to be significantly effective in bridging this gap. Post-intervention assessments revealed a marked improvement in both knowledge and practices among postnatal mothers. The results underscore the importance of providing targeted health education to postnatal mothers during their hospital stay. Improving maternal awareness through structured interventions not only empowers mothers but also plays a crucial role in reducing neonatal morbidity and mortality. Regular implementation of such educational initiatives in maternity care settings is strongly recommended to promote safe, evidence-based new-born care practices.
